The Mistress's Revenge by Tamar CohenMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
At first I wasn't sure I was going to like the book very much - the description made it feel a bit cheap, or worse, cheesy. But I figured it could be a good summer read, and it was!
The book is written as if it is a series of letters (written in journal form) from a woman to her ex-lover. She has just been dumped by this married man with whom she had been having an affair for 5 years. The letters/journal detail her descent into temporary mental illness as she becomes obsessed with the man and his family.
I was surprised at how suspenseful the book was at times. I often found myself reading later into the night than I had planned just to see what the woman would do next. I was also surprised at how well the author was able to communicate all of the emotions that come along with a broken heart (especially a mostly-unanticipated broken heart).
While overall I enjoyed the book, I did feel a bit let down with the ending - there was so much build up that the climax was actually a bit underwhelming (but still clever, I have to admit).
If you're interested in a quick, suspenseful, summer read I can definitely recommend this one.
